Competition reveals NZ’s best sommeliers
The country’s top wine professionals have been recognised at the New Zealand Sommelier of the Year competition.
Wellington-based sommelier Marek Przyborek has won the title of New Zealand Sommelier of the Year 2026, while Hugo Adenot is the New Zealand Junior Sommelier of the Year 2026.
Hospitality professionals from across the country tested their knowledge, technical ability and service skills at the competition, which was held by the New Zealand Sommeliers & Wine Professionals Association at the New Zealand School of Food and Wine in Auckland's Viaduct.
Originally from Poland, Marek Przyborek has lived in New Zealand for nearly a decade and currently works at Noble Rot Wine Bar in Wellington. He previously won the New Zealand Sommelier title in 2018.
João Marreiros placed second and Miguel Borges was third.

Marek Przyborek says he enjoys the excitement and challenge of the competitions. “They push you to test your knowledge across a broad range of subjects. The practical tastings and service tasks demand quick thinking and the ability to complete a series of tasks within strict time limits.
“I've certainly benefited from competing internationally in Europe and Asia, made possible through New Zealand's membership of ASI Association of Sommeliers International,” adds Przyborek.
Przyborek wins a place at the New Zealand Winegrower Sommit taking place in Waitaki Valley 22-23 January 2027, joining an international cohort of sommeliers. He will also attend Sauvignon Blanc New Zealand 2027 in Marlborough 2-4 February 2027.
Originally from France, New Zealand Junior Sommelier of the Year Hugo Adenot has been working in Auckland for some time and is currently at Ground Wine Bar. He has won a trip to Queenstown to attend the New Zealand Organic Winegrowers Conference in 2027.
Hailie Robinson placed second in the Junior Somm competition, with Joey Jackson third.
