DB hails sustainability progress in 2024 report

DB has released its 2024 Sustainability Report, marking a decade of reporting on the company’s sustainability journey.

One of its environmental sustainability ambitions is to be net-zero carbon in production by 2030.

A wholly owned subsidiary of The Heineken Company, DB’s brands include Heineken®, Tiger, Export, Monteith’s, Tuatara, Tui, Odd Company and White Claw. It also produces cider brands Orchard Thieves and Rekorderlig.

Highlights from DB’s 2024 Sustainability Report:

  • Carbon emissions in production have reduced by 55% on the company’s 2018 baseline, which DB says means it is well on its way to achieving the target of net carbon zero emissions in production by 2030. The reduction achieved so far is the equivalent of taking approximately 1,180 cars off the road.

  • Water use has reduced over the past 10 years by 82,500,000 litres – or the equivalent of 33 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

  • Fossil-fuel consumption for steam and hot water in DB’s breweries has reduced by the equivalent of 700 households’ total energy consumption since 2014.

DB Managing Director Matt Wilson says that other important initiatives are underway as well. “In 2024, we began a major energy efficiency project to develop a new control methodology for the refrigeration plant at our Waitematā Brewery.

“This work will be completed in 2025 and sets us up to make further significant capital investment to upgrade the brewery’s refrigeration plant and implement heat-recovery technology. We anticipate these upgrades and new technology will deliver further carbon savings and energy efficiency gains in coming years.”

Matt Wilson says he is proud of the company’s commitment to sustainability and is optimistic that under its refreshed Brew a Better Aotearoa sustainability strategy it has prioritised the right work to help achieve the company’s sustainability targets.
