DB rolls out zero alc beer taps across NZ

DB Breweries is rolling out a portfolio of zero alcohol beer on tap across New Zealand following the success of a pioneering trial that it says solved one of the biggest barriers to serving zero alcohol beer through traditional hospitality draught systems.

The nationwide rollout is beginning in selected venues this month, with 300 venues expected to be ranging a zero tap by the end of the year. It includes Heineken 0.0, Export Zero and the new Monteith's Zero Pale Ale.

The activity follows a New Zealand-first pilot launched earlier this year, which tested new technology designed to pour ice-cold zero alcohol beer on tap without freezing in the lines.

Conducted at Auckland venues Empire Tavern and Moretons, DB says the trial delivered strong consumer feedback, consistent product quality and sales that exceeded expectations.

DB Managing Director Peter Hart says it marks the beginning of a significant shift in how no alcohol beer is experienced in New Zealand. “Until now, consumers choosing zero alcohol beer have had a different experience from everyone else at the table. Our ambition is simple. If someone chooses zero alcohol, they should still be able to enjoy the same freshly poured pint, in the same venue, as part of the same social occasion. This is about socialising without compromise.

“The market remains challenging, but this is a clear example of focusing on the areas we can control,” says Hart.

DB estimates the New Zealand zero alcohol category is growing by around 10% annually, with Heineken 0.0 currently the country's leading zero alcohol beer brand.

Hart says the initiative is part of a broader shift in how hospitality venues cater to changing consumer preferences. “We're seeing more people choose moderation at different moments in their lives, but they still want to be part of the occasion.  

“Looking at international trends and the response to our trial, we believe New Zealand is moving toward a future where a zero alcohol beer tap is a normal part of every bar.”
